Last night, Mindjet Catalyst received its first update! Here are some of the improvements that our team implemented to make your collaboration experience even better!

For those of you who follow social media & productivity gurus, you may be familiar with Steve Rubel. He is the senior vice president for Edelman Digital (PR agency) and has often been considered a thought leader on PR, Social media and productivity.
Yesterday, I caught this nice interview for the Tao of Productivity series with Steve on the blog, Homepages of Karthick Gopal.
In it, Steve shares, “I have become a huge fan of mindmapping. I use MindManager on my PC, Mac and iPhone to brainstorm ideas and solutions to problems. I like to mind map when I am in the air and use the time for ideation and to catch up on correspondence.”
Check out the full interview here.
P.S. I love to map on flights as well! It’s amazing how separating from land spurs on my own creativity and breakthrough thinking! Where’s your favorite place to get creative?
With the launch of MindManager 8 for Mac, we’re pleased to introduce a new, integrated service on the web that transforms your maps into other file formats. And, from other file formats back into maps!
While it’s always been possible to cut and paste map topics into a document, certain elements weren’t transferred like the hyperlinks or detailed topic notes.
With our new service, all that has changed! Read the rest of this entry »

Is your team the victim of over-communication?
Here are some of the tell-tale signs…
- Lack of team alignment
- Duplication of work and effort
- Multiple file versions – no single source of truth
- Flooded email inboxes and unanswered questions
- Longer sales cycles
- Slower innovations
- Delayed projects
We’re living in an ‘age of inundation’. Too much communication with too little collaboration… And if you believe the forecasts, it’s only getting worse. Read the rest of this entry »
Use Map Markers well and you’ll find the value of your mapping increase exponentially.
One way to start realizing the potential of map markers is through a new add-in called “Power Markers for MindManager“. (Note: This add-in works with both MindManager 7 and 8 for Windows.)
Power Markers let you more easily keep track of important things that get lost deep within your larger maps. It does this by providing a complementary view of your map’s markers in the MindManager task pane window. You can either view an automatic roll-up of your markers or a ‘hot list’ of topics organized by your markers. Read the rest of this entry »

Yesterday, I listened to a great segment on NPR that discussed the history of the phrase "Do More with Less". I used to shudder when I heard that phrase. What does "doing more with less" really mean? It typically evokes either groans or excitement. Does it imply burdens, budget cuts, layoffs, or rather…opportunity.
Being Productive
Does "doing more with less" make you more productive? I’d say yes, given the classic definition of productivity. The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition, defines productivity as “the rate at which goods or services are produced, especially output per unit of labor.” But in the information economy, it’s a little trickier to measure. We’re simply not producing widgets. Jonathon Spira, CEO and chief analyst at Basex, is just starting a series of blogs on the challenges in defining productivity for the knowledge age.
I suppose it’s important for academics and analysts to understand and measure productivity, but I’ve found the definitions of productivity to be too limiting. What about the cost of productivity? And the quality of the outputs?
Yesterday, I touched on these questions a bit in a great podcast, "Going Beyond GTD (Getting Things Done)" which will be posted on the GTD Virtual Study Group blog shortly. (I’ll also be sharing my experience with GTD and Mindjet in a March 24 Mindjet webinar)
In the podcast, I explained how GTD has made me more productive. It has improved how I process and deliver work (and personal) projects. But, getting to the end zone and delivering a project isn’t enough…
Being Efficient
Another interpretation of ‘doing more with less’ is to be efficient. Merriam-Webster defines efficient as being "productive without waste". But, who can honestly claim that they’re efficient? Look at our culture and the world at large, we’re pretty inefficient. We produce, probably too much at times, and we create a lot of waste along the way. I look at myself and ask, "Am I efficient at work, or life?" I am constantly producing, but at what cost to my limited resources – time, energy, and money.
And, is efficiency really enough…
Being Effective
The magic isn’t only about getting things done or doing more with less; it’s about getting things done well. It’s about producing the optimal, intended or desired result using the least amount of effort or resources. That’s where mind mapping and Mindjet helps us all shine. We’re creating visual reflections of our individual or team thinking. Externalizing and seeing our thoughts helps us understand ourselves in a deeper, more meaningful way. And, as a result, we take more powerful actions and make more effective changes in our businesses and lives. We’re building alignment across teams, increasing clarity, purpose and a true sense of ownership.
Mind mapping has been helping executives build better strategies, writers think more clearly, teams plan out realistic projects, analysts perform in-depth research, coaches provide great tools for their clients, and so much more.
Just take a look at what people are saying about Mindjet. Mind maps are definitely making an impact! Let’s share with each other to build out our mapping best practices, templates, and ideas. Our impact together is incredible and we’re changing the world, one map at a time.
So, yes, let’s ‘do more with less’ and get productive, efficient AND effective. Let’s add the quality back in our work, and, more importantly, our lives.

Alan Yoshioka continues to push the limits with his Mindjet Mashups transforming emails in Gmail into Remember The Milk (RTM) tasks and then using them from his MindManager dashboard map. Here are the results of my test this morning:
Remember The Milk Link: Drag your Remember The Milk link from your account to your map. Access & update your tasks directly in the embedded browser.

Remember The Milk - Published Task Lists: RTM lets you publish lists to the public or specific contacts. This allows others to see but not change the tasks.

What works: This appears to be another way to access a great task manager within your project maps. Gain quick access to your tasks lists and make updates directly within MindManager. You can also add publised task lists into project status dashboards.
Future improvements: At first glance, I noticed a few areas that can be improved with this mashup.
-
Ability to link to specific RTM lists (e.g. Work, Errands, Study, etc…)
-
Ability to drag and drop single tasks directly into maps
-
Ability to use MindManager’s news reader or web services to access (and update) RTM tasks
If you know ways to make my desired changes above work, please share in the comments!
