First, let me apologize for any inconvenience caused by Snow Leopard issues with MindManager 7. Mindjet is committed to the Mac platform and we will be releasing an update to MindManager 7 to work with Snow Leopard by September 15th.

Now, for some very promising news about MindManager 8 for Mac.

The Mindjet team has been hard at work finalizing the details to launch our latest update to MindManager, MindManager 8 for Mac! It’s been a long-time coming and our team is very excited.

I’m personally engaged and excited as well. I’ve had to start using a Mac for the first time in my career to better understand the power and capabilities of this release. And, I’m pretty sure you’re going to be excited too. It’s taking a large step forward in capabilities.

Here’s a preview of what I’ll be writing about in the coming weeks:

  • Integration with iWork’s Pages & Keynote
  • Integration with iCal, Address book, iChat, iPhoto, & MobileMe
  • Microsoft integration with Entourage, Word, PowerPoint, Document Connection, Office Live, and SharePoint
  • Multi-touch Gesture Support
  • Plus a few surprises you’ll hear about in future posts!

Stay tuned for weekly announcements as we get closer to launch.

A feature I really miss in the MAC version is the ability to fit & balance map from the right click menu. I do fit & balance all the time and need to move to the menu bar to do so.n

I am using MM on WIN as well as MAC. The version for WIN is far better than the MAC version, but the MAC version is usable. The big advantage is the ability to use the same files in both environments. My primary work tool is MAC, and I normally start a MindMap in this environment. When exporting I open WIN on my MAC and do the export in the WIN version.

A feature I really miss in the MAC version is the ability to fit & balance map from the right click menu. I do fit & balance all the time and need to move to the menu bar to do so.

I have tried other MM products, but no come close to Mindjet.

When is a new release of MM 8 for MAC planned and what new features can we expect?

I'm getting ready to move from PC to Mac. Will my Mindjet maps from the PC be usable on Mindjet for Mac? Thanks.

Yes, you're maps should all work on your Mac. There are a few features that will show up as read-only / unavailable b/c they're not enabled on the Mac (e.g. display excel range, outlook integration, database integration). In my experience, the majority of our users do not take advantage of these differences and have no problems with the switch.

    Hi,
PC user that went to Mac. MM favourite application, bought the Mac version from the same reseller that sold me the windows version. They knew me but didn´t tell me about the differences. Had a big fight, because I didn´t want to pay for the poor mac-version (finally paid). Question: Will Mac 8 have the same features as the PC-version? Today I run the PC-version on my mac (VM-Ware). I really, really wait for getting rid of everything that reminds me of windows. Please tell me I can through MM8 för windows and buy the new Mac MM. Peter

BK, we announced here on the blog that we shifted our plans mid-november to incorporate more development time to ensure quality and address some issues identified during our beta testing. Our updated plan is to release this in January prior to Macworld 2010.

    Thanks,

Ona, you have a right to be frustrated, I hear you.
I apologize. Obviously I wish to have it out there today too. However, in my (close to) 3 years at Mindjet, I can report that I’m actually very, very pleased that the team is taking the time to do it right.

Mindjet has been making many investments in (some great) people and technologies to improve how we plan, build, and deliver products so we can do this better for years to come! Will we execute perfectly? Probably not. Will we make mistakes along the way? Most definitely.

All that said, I’m really excited about Mindjet’s future. And, for the opportunity to work with and help our customers tackle, map out, and solve problems and deliver projects that will improve our world and lives!

Again, I apologize on behalf of Mindjet for the delay. We’re committed to the Mac platform and will continue to grow it for you and our other customers.

Now we’re being told JANUARY 2010!!!
Is it time to give up? We’ve been waiting years, repeat, years to get close to Windows.
There are so many new programs hitting the market, are you not worried?

Can you please let me know if the Mac version will have the same functionality as version 8 on the windows platform? Currently they are worlds apart. Also, is the pricing going to jump up with version 8?

Miles, I wasn’t given the OK to publish any dates! We’re shooting to finalize the release and bring it to market this month. Sorry I can’t be more specific at this time. I’ll post it here and we’ll have a press release and update on Mindjet.com when we officially launch.

I’m very happy that Mindjet is smart enough to delay release when the code isn’t ready. This behavior will keep me a loyal customer. Trust is important and I look closely at quality. MindManager 7 for Mac isn’t as functional as the PC version (of which I have used) but it is solid. I’m glad that I can expect the same high quality.

    Bravo Mindjet

Sorry for the delay! We’ve built some cool new features into MindManager 8 and the technical wizardry required some extra cycles of development and testing. We’ll be releasing in November!

I wrote yesterday, and for some reason, all what I put as comment – never appeared.

So to go all over again.

I am one of customers that will adore integration with iWork and W/2008.

From my standpoint, I can see that in MindManager Team, there is no actually final decision made concerning: which project Management Tool will support.

In PM World, 2 main programs are in use:
    MS Project
    Primavera

MS project, with new Server version came close to Primavera, and it is preety open code for developers and integration.

One new fact in Project management appeared – more and more professionals are using CCPM (Critical Chain Project Management) , like Pro-Chain software, that is actually Add-On to MS Project.

I have Windows version of MM8 and importing and exporting from and to MM8 with add-on in MS Project –working just fine .

    My “genious” will be tip.
I> With integration of MS Project in MAC version of MM8+ (or MMx), and automatically availability for work with CCPM, MindManager Team can offer to market unique software ability. With good marketing, with cutting edge on integration w/ MS Project and CCPM integration, a LOT of Project Managers will, I am positive, pass to MMx for MAC.
II> Take in consideration that lot of Project Managers are using MAC, and news as I described above can only make them- more happy, and willing to purchase MMx for Mac. Fact is also, that PMs are usually persons that can afford that too.
III> It seems that such integration is a huge work, but think it is really not..Integration w/ MS Project was done I Windows version, so, there is no reason to not perform translation for MMx version of MAC

Second tip (that can, and should be integrated in MM8 for MAC) is:
Automatic task mailing to dedicated person.
What I am talking about is automatic message proceeding, without human interference
For example: I have nice MMap, and I have nice reminders for every task. That reminder appears in my Outlook (for Windows version) correctly. But that is just reminder for me, and I must manually send mail to person that supposes to perform task.
The goal is – for specific task –and specific e-mail address- software should be integrated so much that can send automatic mail to task performer.
What I really want is to be able to attach, or dedicate special mail address for each task that is to be performed, and send it to that one (and each other one included in that task performance) with lead time frame (to be adjustable) BEFORE related task actually suppose to start.
Only pre-requisite for that will be that computer is online and working. So, when M.Map is set-up, no worries concerning reminders sent to persons that suppose to perform the work.

This is just 2 thing yhat may help MM Team to pass to Blue Oceans, and act like Apple –no competition with such software integration.

Have a nice day ( I am waiting for MM8 for MAC, as well.)

Nicholas, sorry, I must have missed the question. No, database syncing will not be in this release of Mac 8.

Colin, let me verify to be 100% sure. We’ll have a good upgrade price, we love loyal fans. I’m hunting down the specifics today…

Thanks for this, looks like I will need an OS upgrade (overdue anyway). Another question, am I right in getting the impression that MM recommend existing owners of Mac 7 should buy a second copy as this will be the cheapest option. I assume this means there is no intention of you folks running a discounted upgrade option for loyal (and very long term) users. I have used both Windows and Mac version of MM for years as have many of us.

1 When is the Expected Launch Date for MM8 for the MAC?
(A specific Date or Within days/weeks/Months?

2 In the UK, if MM7 is purchased (from anywhere) what would be the cost & plan to allow people to move to your MM8 version?

I too have been a long time user of MM. Started with MM6 in PC now I’ve moved to Mac. Just purchased MM7 for Mac and can’t wait for upgrade to MM8 for Mac. Will it have FLASH export like PC version? I really like the idea of the player and interactive SWF formats in PC (never used them) but I left the PC world for good and hope you bring those capabilities to the Mac version.

Good to hear that you are finally releasing an update to MM for Mac. The Mac Community of users was starting to wonder if you didn’t love us anymore or just forgot about us…

Personally, I’m hoping that MM8 for Mac is feature comparable with the Windows version. After the long wait on an update, huge gaps in features will be like pouring salt in a wound.

One small enhancement that I would like to submit is a drop down of recently opened Items in the Template Chooser. I have 10 maps that I do most of my work in, the ability to select those directly from a recent items list would speed up my workflow substantially. (Essentially move the “Open Recent” File menu option into the template chooser…)

I currently use MM8 for windows and have a large map linked to a MS Access 2007 database. Currently MM7 for mac can open the file, but treats all instances of access database entries as static and uneditable. Will MM8 for mac be able to sync with Access databases? Or if not Access, will it sync with mySQL or other database formats?

Erwin, MindManager Mac will be able to sync with applications that leverage iCal. I’m not aware if RTM, iThings or Omnifocus use their own database to store tasks and events or if they take advantage of iCal. It’s likely that these vendors, if they don’t already, will move to use iCal soon. Likewise, we’ll need to evolve the integration to make it run smoother with GTD processes. It’ll be a nice step forward, but not the end of the journey yet.

Any help on how Mindmanager can sync with ‘specific GTD-applications’?
I’m thinking of eg. Remember the milk, iThings, Omnifocus. Maybe this is already possible?

Specifically, I would like to have something similar to the integration with Outlook (on the Win-platform) and the future Entourage integration. However, compared to the ‘GTD-applications’ the Outlook tasks just don’t cut it for me.

I am already a user of Mindmanager7 (for Win), but (1) now switched to Mac completely and (2) want to integrate Mindmanager into my to do/task management both in the phase of brainstorming about new tasks and in the phase of maintaining my to do’s by having a general overview.

Hopefully you can help me out with this.

    Regards,

    Erwin

I have been using Mindmanager now on the Mac platform since 2008, and before that for a couple of years on PC.

My biggest complaint with the MAC version has been the lack of control of how your map looks on the MAC. You can’t style the lines the way you can on the PC.

I think the thin lines makes it difficult to get an overview of the map. Is there any changes in the area, so that the two versions are more like each other?

Mark – I can’t predict the future. If I could, well, I wouldn’t be working today! So, the decision to buy is yours and yours alone. I’ll be highlighting the document export soon.

Kit – Not yet. It’ll be a big effort but if the Mac community and usage grows, the business case to do it becomes much stronger. I’m pulling for you!

Leandro – that’s interesting. What business are you in? How would you like that integrated?

KA: If daylite leverages iCal then there’s a chance an integration is already in play with this release. I’ll take a look in the coming weeks.

HK: Thanks for being a longtime user. The upgrade prices will be announced in the coming weeks.

VB: I’m primarily using MindManager on Windows and have been since version 6. The feature that you speak of doesn’t exist in Windows. You can open several maps inside of MindManager, they appear in tabs but they’re not within one .mmap file. They each have their own .mmap file.

One feature I am now missing in MM7 for Mac, that has been available in Windows for ages is the ability to have multiple maps in tabs within one .mmap file.
This was facilitating the need for multiple versions of a map, multiple maps to cover a one project, map connectivity, etc.

Please tell me that this will be avaialble in MM8 for Mac !!!
    Please !!!

As a longtime user of Mindmanager (started off on the PC several years ago, then moved on to Mac) I’m hopeful that this will match the features of the PC version. Two questions:
    a) Any chance of still getting into Beta program?
    b) any idea for those longtimers like myself re upgrade policy (thinking of something like the pricing for Snow Leopard etc.).

    Hi Michael.
This is great news. As a long time Mac user and user of MM7 I felt a little shortchanged when I saw the capability of the windows version. I am really looking forward to this! Any word on a iphone app?

    Reply
  50. Mark Coleman

How improved is the Word integration, odes it map the structure of a mindmap into heading levels and body content, or only an outline with tabs etc.
I use mind mapping software to capture thoughts when authoring documents and then cut’n’paste/export to an open document template or RTF file.
Unfortunately none I have tried including the MM7 trial seem to make it easy to easily move the content into headings without manually applying styles.
When I was using the Windows versions of earlier MM editions I was able to do what I needed, will this support be in MM8 for Mac.
Also can you outline the changes in more detail in the changes or additions for the application integration in the list of apps above, in particular iCal, PowerPoint/Keynote and if Mail.app will have integration.
If the word support is what I’m looking for that will be enough for me to but MM7 now.
