Everyone has some powerful memories about their favorite baseball team and how they became a fan, so we’ll start by sharing Phil’s with you:
Phil was born into a “Cubs fan” family, but his devotion increased when, as a senior in high school, he was able to procure two tickets to the Cubs game on April 16, 1985. There was just one problem: April 16th was a school day. The solution? Inviting Dad to the game, with the hope that he could work his “responsible adult and parent” magic with the attendance office at Freeport High School. Good old dad ended up coming through for Phil who experienced a “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” kind of escapade. At the gate on Waveland avenue, Phil and his Dad were met by Yosh Kiwano, long time Cubs Clubhouse Manager. Yosh even asked if Phil would be interested in serving as the team “bat boy” for the day.
The Cubs ended up beating the Phillies, 1 to 0, in the first extra inning game of the year. The winning pitcher was future hall of fame pitcher Dennis Eckersley. Phil also notes that his Dad passed away a little over a year ago and that he is very thankful that he has this very fond memory of “time with Dad.”
