Thank You Mindjet!

Today is it!  After 4 1/2 years, this is my last day at Mindjet and tomorrow I will be starting a new job with Microsoft.  This is an amazing opportunity for me.  Please read this post about it on my Synergist Blog on the Mindjet LabsMindjet and MindManager have been wonderful for me and have transformed the way that I think and work.  I have faith that Mindjet will be successful moving forward; it is still a great company with a fantastic product.

Latest Mind Mapping Software Survey from Chuck Frey Reveals Interesting User Trends and Characteristics

I wanted to share some noteworthy results from Chuck Frey’s latest mind mapping software survey on Innovation Tools. This is his second survey in a running series that includes findings from over 500 participants.

Do you agree or disagree with any of these findings? What would you predict these results to be 2 years from now — vastly different?

1. Top 3 factors important to this audience when deciding on a mind mapping software purchase were:

- Ease of Use

- Integration with MS Office applications

- Program Performance

Based on these respondents, looks like a typical mind mapping software user finds the quality and ability of a mapping application to improve his/her job and lifestyle more important than cost. This means companies must continually work to gain customer feedback on essentials like feature set and interface navigation.

Echoing Chuck Frey’s thoughts, the results could also suggest more business professionals are using mapping software for everyday tasks and activities- demonstrating the growth of mapping in the mainstream. If true though, proliferation is a work in progress: 94% of people using mapping software export map data into other formats. Could these business users feel the need to share data originally captured in maps in more mainstream applications for colleagues who haven’t yet embraced the solution?

2. Spreading knowledge and use of mind mapping software is viral in nature. The two most popular answers regarding how the survey participants learned about mind mapping software were through 1. blogs and 2. friends / co-workers. Perhaps an average mind mapping software user has to "see it to believe it" and may have high levels of curiosity, openness, trust and a proactive nature.

3. The number one benefit users reported from mind mapping software was "clarity of thought." Unlike note cards, whiteboards etc., mapping software gives users a dynamic platform for easily capturing, editing, structuring/restructuring and sharing data that allows for better breakdown, organization and synthesis of information and the relationships that exist within it.

4. A whopping 86 percent of participants polled experience some sort of time savings from their use of mind mapping software. This means that in addition to clarity of thinking, users have become more productive and efficient with tasks accomplished. 15% of those polled save at least a full day of work (defined as 7 hours or more) per week. What would YOU do with an extra 7 hours per week? Sleep more? Spend more time with friends and family? Counterbalance an insufferable commute?

5. Ease of information collaboration among fellow mind mappers (and also between current mappers and non-mappers) will be key to the future success of the mapping industry. Confirming this, results showed 89% of those surveyed share their mind maps with others (hand written and/or software derived maps). Pain points noted in the survey center around collaboration and involve a difficulty with printing and sharing maps with large amounts of information and a need for enhanced integration capabilities.

Visualizing Information

Artists, kids, yoga instructors, professors, project managers – every walk of life visualizes information that matters to them every day. But what about when the information is complex statistical data? How do we visualize it? Spreadsheets, graphs, endless streams of numbers? We naturally become disconnected to numbers if we can’t identify or visualize the significance of the data.

Here’s a technology that has taken statistics and made the information visual. Gapminder’s Trendalyzer software. Google has acquired them into their fold. Here’s a video from Gapminder giving a demo. It’s an hour long – take a peek and if you toggle forward 6 minutes into it, you’ll see a fascinating depiction of how housing across the world ranges from the poorest to the richest on "Dollar Street." When you see the "data" presented, do you feel yourself identifying with the significance of the numbers?

This is a great example of how people and technology are making information meaningful. What are some other examples out there?

Curious about the people behind Mindjet?

Thank you Brian, Noah, Charles, Michael, and Dennis for the very warm welcome. I’ll send a note to you individually as well.

Coming into my 4th full day, I have to say I’m astounded with the passion from all of our devoted users supporting the MindManager approach and this company. It is very Apple-esque in their early days.

I’m interested in getting to know as many of you as I possibly can, and how you use MindManager, what kind of projects you are working on, and any feedback you have for Mindjet. In return, I thought some of you might be curious about the people behind the scenes here at Mindjet??

Who are you interested in getting to know? I can get the scoop ;-) ! Want to know more about Michael Scherotter, the energy behind Mindjet Labs? Or how about Richard Barber, our VP of Engineering? Stefan Funk is one of our top engineers and he’s a brilliant character. Our team in Germany is equally full of interesting personalities. I invite you to be curious about the people who bring you this fantastic software. Just let me know what job function (marketing, engineering, sales, support, exec team, etc) you’d like to know more about and I’ll give you the insider view! Who would you like to get to know first?
