Use MindManager maps as blueprints for successful blog postings

While the low entry barriers to blogging are empowering, the caveat is: Once you start a blog, you better keep it running. You must generate content or the blogosphere will soon forget you. This subtle pressure leads some bloggers to experience a mental unease that one might call “blogophobia” – the ever-present anxiety of letting your blog wilt like an un-watered flower.

And it is not only about quantity, it’s also about quality. The blogosphere rewards interesting blogs with viral attention: An interesting blog goes a long way - granted you have something new and interesting to say or you are clever enough to link your posting to the right places (through trackbacks, hyperlinks, or comments). Sites such as BlogPulse help you identify these “sweet spots of the blogosphere,” that is, trends and topics that you may want to refer in order to attract eyeballs. Still, it is quite a challenge to publish something that stands out from the noise of a total of the estimated 3.5 million blogs that are out there.

It is no wonder that the fear of the blank page has translated into the digital age. But help is on the way! While blogs with advice for blog writers flourish and a service like Autoblogger even suggests you fully outsource your blog, there is also a software alternative: MindManager. MindManager’s unique map interface allows you to visualize your thoughts, organize them, and put them in context.  It is the perfect catalyst for writing a successful blog post.

Here’s how it works:

1. Start with your blog topic in the center of your map.

Start

2. See what’s out there. Blogging is two-way communication and in order to say something interesting, you ought to listen first. So, browse through existing blogs, scan ideas and thoughts, and import relevant content in your map (quick summaries, RSS feeds, images, hyperlinks, trackbacks).

Pull in content

3. Now make connections, review arguments and counter-arguments, and identify potential gaps for new ideas.

Make connections

4. Craft an outline of your thoughts and develop a logical progression of your points.  If the flow doesn’t work, rearrange the order of your points. Switch back between linear outline and non-linear map view.

Outline

5. Finally, use the notes feature to add full text to your topics and export the final blog post into a Word document or copy/paste it directly into your blog host’s interface.

Notes

6. Go back to where you started and make sure you trackback or link to those blogs that have provided the context for yours.

Final text

With MindManager:

  • Getting started is easy.
  • You easily organize your key points, link them to existing blogs, and make your argumentation crystal-clear.
  • You make sure that your topic is fresh and relevant.
  • Plus: You can repurpose your blog map as a template for future blogs.

Nice, but the screen shots are too small to be readable.

This would be altogether more useful and interesting if Mind Manager was not Mac-phobic. I really like the product. It is much better than anything available for the Mac (Novamind seems to come closest). Its intuitiveness is generally of Mac quality. The Mac is extremely popular among bloggers. Maybe now is the time for an OSX version of Mind Manager?

    Paul,

Thanks for your suggestion. Mindjet currently does not offer a version of MindManager X5 specifically built for the Mac. However, many Mac users have reported that MindManager works well when run on Virtual PC for a Mac.

In other words … brainstorm and plan your text. Duh!

    tim,
The screenshots are still too small.

Now that you are pursuing blogs, it would be good to include all forms of the word within the MindManager dictionary. Just an FYI for the next version or update.

How about more links to MindManager blog sites and explaining how a person replies to a node. I see where this capability is headed and it looks promising.

Steve, this is a good point and we’re working on it!

OK, so how do I copy not just the outline but the notes as well. I love the idea but the notes not pasting is a barrier for me.

Congratulation to the article. It is really a nice way to structure and arrange content.
What about a template to export and create a blog directly from MindManager? This could be very useful for business purposes around a subject in an intranet.

Thansk for your suggestion, Andy. I’ll be sure to pass it on to our product development team.

Besides the templates that are in the product, you can find map templates in the map library on our web site: http://www.mindjet.com/us/download/map_library/index.php?s=3

    Hope this helps!
