Liveplasma is Mapping Out Pop Culture Networks

Technorati Tag(s): , — June 8, 2005 @ 8:21 pm

Chris Holmes, Mindjet’s VP of Business Development, told me about Liveplasma today, a new visual search engine that maps out connections among movies, directors, actors, or bands/artists, based on the affinity of taste.

Here’s how it works: If you are a fan of Coldplay, then you may also like Radiohead, the Kings of Leon and Grandaddy. If "Casablanca" is one of your favorite movies, then you should also see "12 Angry Men" or "To Kill A Mockingbird". This kind of "if, then" game of pop culture preferences is the business model (that is, the interface) of Liveplasma. It’s like Amazon, Netflix, and iTunes merging into a map! The criteria for strong or weak ties between the search results remain somewhat obscure (does anyone know?), but if you consider this more an exploratory trip through the cosmos of entertainment, you will be entertained.

It is not too difficult to envision Liveplasma as a great add-on for services such as LinkedIn, allowing you to visualize your social and professional networks and literally see the connections. So far though, all the new visual search engines deliver nice-to-look-at results, but do they really offer added value?
